Av og til får man ting man skriver i retur, og det er alltid smertefullt. I sin selvbiografi forteller storheten Susan Blackmore om den første gangen hun ble refusert:
I sat down, breathing hard, and saw there was a letter, in printed airmail envelope, from the Journal of Parapsychology. Some months before I had sent off my first journal paper, criticizing previous theories of ESP and memory and arguing that none of them made sense and that they all needed revising.
I couldn't wait until after the seminar. I tried to open the letter quietly and peep surreptitiously at the contents. I glimpsed the first line: "We recommend that this paper not be published in its present form, nor in any form."
